GCS Education Foundation Seeking CORE Champion Awards Nominations
The Greeneville City Schools (GCS) Education Foundation is accepting public nominations for its 4th annual CORE (Commit, Optimize, Reinvest, & Equip) Champion Awards through January 8th, 2015 in the categories of Outstanding Young Alumni, Distinguished Alumni, Distinguished Service, and Outstanding Patronage.
The winners of these awards will be introduced at the Education Foundation’s 4th annual CORE Champion Awards Banquet, to be held in April 2016. The event will honor alumni and friends of the Greeneville City School System.
“The CORE Champion Awards Banquet gives us the opportunity to remind our community of our organization’s mission, and to recognize and express appreciation to some of the many outstanding GHS alumni and devoted friends of the Greeneville City School System,” said executive director of the Education Foundation, Amanda Waddell. “The quality of previous nominees and recipients is impressive and serves as a testament to the exceptionalism of our system and community.”
CORE Champions will be honored for their commitment to the service to others, their ability to optimize resources, reinvest in the community, and equip others to be successful.
The selection committee seeks to review the broadest possible range of qualified nominees.
“We are very fortunate to have a large pool of exceptional GHS alumni and community supporters from which to draw CORE Champion nominees, and we hope people will take the time to submit candidates for consideration,” Waddell added.
Nominations from the public should follow these guidelines:
· Outstanding Young Alumni Award will be granted to a Greeneville High School graduate who is 35 years old or younger when nominated, for significant accomplishments in their profession or chosen field of endeavor or for distinguished human service to their community, state, or nation, thereby providing students with an outstanding role model.
· Distinguished Alumni Award will be granted to a Greeneville High School graduate for their achievements, contributions, or service that benefits humankind and brings honor to the Greeneville City School System.
· Distinguished Service Award will be granted to an individual (alumni or non-alumni of Greeneville High School) who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to education in the town of Greeneville.
· Outstanding Patronage Award will be granted to a benefactor (alumni or non-alumni; individual, family, or entity) exemplifying outstanding dedication and patronage to public education. The awardee is deserving of recognition for their spirit of giving not only to the Education Foundation, but also to the youth in our community.

John Compton To Speak At 2015 CORE Champion Awards Banquet on April 14th, 2015
The GCS Education Foundation will honor the award recipients of the CORE Champion Awards on Tuesday, April 14th, 2015 at 6PM, at the General Morgan Inn. Greeneville native, and 1979 GHS graduate, Mr. John Compton will return to Greeneville to headline the event. Mr. Compton was the first recipient of the CORE Champion Award for Distinguished Alumni in 2013.
CORE Champions are defined as those who demonstrate dedication to human service by committing to a cause, optimizing resources, re-investing in the community, and equipping others for success. “As an alumni, and previous award recipient, Mr. Compton fully represents the spirit of this event, and we are so grateful for his participation”, said Amanda Waddell, Executive Director of the GCS Education Foundation.

Mr. Compton became a Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Partner in 2015 after serving as an Operating Advisor since 2013. CD&R is one of the most successful Private Equity firms in the world with over $30Billion in assets under management. He currently serves as Chairman of TruGreen — the nations largest lawn care company. Mr. Compton is a 29-year veteran and former President of PepsiCo, Inc., the world’s 2nd largest food and beverage company with over 250,000 employees in 220 countries. Mr. Compton’s career at PepsiCo started at Frito-Lay in 1983. In 2002, after serving in positions of increasing responsibility in a variety of operational and sales capacities, he was appointed Vice Chairman and President of Frito-Lay North America. Mr. Compton went on to serve as CEO of PepsiCo Americas Foods, which included Frito-Lay North America, Quaker Oats brands, and all of PepsiCo’s Latin American food and snack businesses. He became President of PepsiCo in 2011. Mr. Compton is the former Chief Executive Officer of Pilot Flying J Corporation. He serves on the board of First Horizon National Corporation and was previously on the board of Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. In 2009, he was named a “CEO of Tomorrow” by BusinessWeek. Mr. Compton received a B.S. in Finance from the University of Tennessee. The University of Tennessee has honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Business and a TorchBearer Distinguished Alumnus — the University’s highest Alumni honor.

The Board of Trustees of the Greeneville City Schools (GCS) Education Foundation have chosen the winners of the 2nd Annual CORE Champion Awards in the categories of Outstanding Young Alumni, Distinguished Alumni, Distinguished Service, and Outstanding Patron.
CORE Champions are defined as those who demonstrate dedication to human service by committing to a cause, optimizing resources, re-investing in the community, and equipping others for success.
Champions for 2014 were selected in four categories:
Outstanding Young Alumni – Major Jay Burns, U.S. Army, GHS Class of 1998, Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
Distinguished Alumni – Dr. James B. Abshire, GHS Class of 1969, Senior Scientist for Laser Sensing, Solar System Exploration Division, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
Distinguished Service – Mr. Art Masker, retired President and CEO of Holston United Methodist Home for Children
Outstanding Patron – Mr. Dale Keasling, GHS Class of 1961, Chairman, President and CEO of Home Federal Bank of Tennessee
The GCS Education Foundation will honor the award recipients at the CORE Champion Awards Banquet to be held on Thursday, April 10th, at 6PM, at the General Morgan Inn. East Tennessean, and assistant coach of the women’s basketball team at Marquette University, Tyler Summitt, will be on-hand to address the honorees and dinner guests.

Tyler Summitt is now in his second year of coaching at Marquette University under head coach Terri Mitchell. Summitt is also a co-founder and board member of The Pat Summitt Foundation, participates in public speaking engagements and is active in his church.
Summitt graduated from the University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Honor Program where he was a member of the Tennessee men’s basketball program for two seasons, gaining experience from Cuonzo Martin and Bruce Pearl. Summitt was a student assistant coach for the Tennessee Women’s Basketball Program which is known worldwide for the coaching success of his mother, Pat Summitt. He knows the feeling of victory as he was actively involved in the 2007 through 2009 seasons that resulted in two Lady Vols NCAA National Championships.
“We are thrilled and honored that Coach Summit will help us mark this special occasion, and we’re certain our CORE Champions and banquet guests will find his message inspirational”, said Cynthia Pectol, Chairman of the GCS Education Foundation Board of Trustees.

Coach Tyler Summitt To Speak At 2014 CORE Champion Awards
The Greeneville City Schools (GCS) Education Foundation Board of Trustees has announced Coach Tyler Summitt as the keynote speaker for the organization’s 2nd Annual CORE Champion Awards Banquet at the General Morgan Inn on April 10, 2014.
Tyler Summitt has continued the tradition of coaching that his mother Pat Summitt instilled in him. Tyler is now in his second year of coaching at Marquette University under head coach Terri Mitchell. As an assistant coach, he oversees the team’s offense, is in charge of skill development for every position, performs all recruiting duties and is the scouting coordinator. Tyler is also a co-founder and board member of The Pat Summitt Foundation, participates in public speaking engagements and is active in church with his wife.

Outstanding Young Alumni – Captain Jordan Yokley, M.D., U.S. Army, GHS Class of 2001.
Distinguished Alumni – Mr. John C. Compton, GHS Class of 1979, strategic advisor to Pilot Flying J, the Cleveland Browns, and the Haslam family, and former President of PepsiCo, Inc.
Distinguished Service – Mr. Terry Leonard, GHS Class of 1956, Chairman of Leonard & Associates.
Outstanding Patron – Mr. Scott M. Niswonger, President of the Niswonger Foundation, co-founder of Landair Services, Chairman Emeritus of Forward Air Corporation.
The GCS Education Foundation will honor the award recipients at the CORE Champion Awards banquet to be held on Thursday, April 4th, at 6PM, at the General Morgan Inn. Humanitarian and former UT football coach, Phillip Fulmer will be on-hand to address the honorees and dinner guests.
Coach Phillip Fulmer to speak
Coach Fulmer credits his parents for providing his Christian foundation and teaching him the principles of family, hard work, dedication to goals, and teamwork, which have translated to a lifetime of positive experiences. He is an avid outdoorsman, family man, and civic and community minded.
Coach Fulmer played football at UT from 1968 -1971. He served as Head Football Coach at Tennessee for 17 years, from 1992-2008. In his 17 seasons as Head Football Coach, his record was 152-52 with a 74 percent winning percentage, he had 92 players make a NFL roster, 18 players earned All American honors and another 68 players were selected All-SEC.
Coach Fulmer has taken his winning attitude and team-building principles to the business world and continues to be successful. He appeared in the academy award winning movie, The Blind Side. He has enjoyed working with CBS Sports as an expert studio analyst on Football Saturdays in the fall. He is a partner with Northshore Management Company in Knoxville, and shares his knowledge and experiences through speaking opportunities across the country.
“We are thrilled to be able to have Coach Fulmer with us to help us launch this important event, and to deliver his inspirational message to our CORE Champions and our banquet guests”, said Dr. Craig Shepherd, Chairman of the GCS Education Foundation Board of Trustees.
